Terms of Service
I'll keep this simple: Do not host illegal content and do not spam. More on this:
- You must follow all US state and federal laws
- Pirated or otherwise illegal content is not allowed
- Hate sites or content that encourages violence is an immediate termination
- Adult sites are cool with me. I'll still help with site issues if I can.
- NO SPAM ALLOWED
I reserve the right to terminate service at any time at my sole discretion. You are not entitled to a refund in case of termination of service. I do not offer any kind of warranty and I am not responsible for whatever happens because of the use of this service.
In Case of Downtime
Downtime not because of server maintenance will be credited at the hourly rate Hetzner bills me* for up to the cost of the service - so $5 total. Downtime is considered to be the unavailability of the server itself or core server functions such as the web and database servers. This also includes issues at Hetzner. I employ server monitoring and do my best to keep on top of issues.
Sometimes I'll need to take the server down for work. This could be a quick reboot to apply some updates, or I might need to swap out a failing drive. I will always give advanced notice unless it is something urgent that has to be done now. You will receive an email in advance (or immediately with an apology if this is something unscheduled) and I will also have it up in the client area.
A Word About Server and Site Backups
I run daily server backups and keep them off-server in another location. You can access and restore from the server backup within cPanel, or create a new backup if needed. You are ultimately the one responsible for backups and the safe-keeping of your data. Accidents can happen. Download a backup once in a while and store it on Dropbox or somewhere.
You can keep backups on your hosting account. Some hosts like to sneak in a clause for the opposite around this point, but I want to make this clear. That 20 GB can be used for whatever, as long as it meshes with the above terms. Use it for some backups, host some cool sites, or store a dozen self-composed grunge covers in a super secret directory that nobody should ever see.
Email: It's Hard
Your hosting account includes unlimited mailboxes up to that 20 GB total cap. I take great pride in running my mail server like a third-world dictator, and make sure the IP is closely monitored and has a clean reputation. I strike with an iron first whenever I receive a spam report. However, despite best efforts, I cannot guarantee that email sent from this server will not be delivered to spam, or that it won't run into some kind of deferral issue with a larger mail provider. That's because running your own email server is increasingly an artisanal choice, not a practical one.
If guaranteed inbox delivery is important, and email is critical to your existence, I recommend a dedicated email provider. My favorite? Fastmail. Other options? Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, SendGrid, etc. All of them will work fine.
I'll do my best to help with delivery problems, but if it's out of my control, it's out of my control.
What to Expect for Support
I do this in my spare time, so while I will do my best to handle requests as quickly as possible, there are some cases where it'll have to wait. I might be slower to respond in the evenings (because work), and sometimes I might be asleep. I'll always make sure to handle critical issues as quickly as possible, but if it's not urgent, I'll make sure to take care of it once I'm able to. Stuff down? I'm on it. Need a plugin installed? Might be a minute.
I don't expect this to ever happen, but coming to my other place of work to ask me for help with something or to tell me about stuff being down will be grounds for an immediate discontinuation of service. You will be refunded for the remainder of your term and given enough time to relocate.
Privacy Policy
Here's the information I need to run this service:
- Your name (doesn't need to be real, but it'd be nice)
- Your email address (do not use a burner email!)
- Your address (for billing reasons, but again)
Here's some other information I have access to thanks to the web server:
- Your IP address
- Your browser's User-Agent
Sometimes I turn on Netlify's analytics for this site. Here's their privacy policy.
I also use some anti-fraud services to help make things easier for me:
Please don't take it personally if your order gets flagged. 9/10 times it's because a VPN is being used and the IP doesn't match the address. Just reach out and I'll give the order a second look.
You can request to delete your account at any time. Please understand this will cause the immediate termination of service and may not be eligible for a refund. Inactive accounts that have never had a service purchased will also be removed now and then.
* Hetzner bills monthly, but for simplicity we'll divide this into 730 hours. So for example, $200/month becomes $0.28/hr (rounded up). Two hours of downtime would be $0.56. When this service launches and I have the costs all finalized, I'll update this with the real values.
